The Ministry of Education has trained 200 School Principals from the Southern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, on using the ‘Nenasa’ educational television (TV) channel.
In July, President Mahinda Rajapaksa launched the Nenasa channel from the Ranjan Wijerathne school, in the Monaragala district, one of the poorest districts in Sri Lanka.
The digital, satellite TV channel is provided to the national educational authorities by telecommunications services provider, Dialog Telekom, free of charge.
The distance education channel is expected to fill the gap created by teacher shortages in rural and under served schools in the country.
Nenasa broadcasts programmes developed by the National Institute of Education, for students in grades 9, 10 and 11. Initially the channel is expected to reach 1,000 schools selected by the education authorities.
“It opens a new vista in access to education for students in grades 9, 10 and 11, to an estimated 500,000 students across Sri Lanka, including the Northern and Eastern provinces of the country,” said a statement from Dialog Telekom today.
