Sky Network, a subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), is to introduce Wimax services to parts of Sri Lanka that do not get ADSL coverage from SLT.
“The venture will commence operations in March 2010 and will provide services to Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara Districts in Phase 1,” said a press release from the Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka.

SLT is the major shareholder of Sky Network that will function parallel to SLT operations - by pushing Wimax services (wireless broadband services) to parts of the country where ADSL services are not offered by SLT.
The company is expecting to build a Wimax customer base of 11,000 in Phase 1.
Sky Network is an investment of US $ 12.8 million for the first 2 phases.
The venture will provide broadband internet facilities using the latest Wimax technology Wimax 802.16e.
The company expects to provide coverage to the entire island in 4 implementation phases.
